Alvaro Flores almost got away with murdering his girlfriend in 1978 in Chicago, but was arrested in Stuart on Wednesday, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
The 57-year-old is accused of killing Maria Verela, stabbed to death in a Chicago apartment. Flores has been living in Martin County for years, under the name Aiden Garcia, with his wife and three children, the sheriff’s office reports.
A fingerprint check for a gun permit in 2000 under the name Aiden Garcia alerted the FBI to Flores’ location, but he was released shortly afterward. Chicago prosecutors have since been gathering more evidence in the murder case and assisted Martin County Sheriff’s Office in making the arrest.
Flores is being held at the Martin County Jail without bond. He will be extradited to Chicago in the coming weeks, investigators report.
