A former Stuart contractor convicted of stealing money from victims of Hurricane Wilma a decade ago was arrested this week in Louisiana, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies from the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force tracked Steven Karl Klix, 54, to Metairie, La. where he was arrested.
Klix became a fugitive in 2007 after disappearing following his convictions for contracting without a license and grand theft.
Hurricane Wilma hit the Treasure Coast in 2005, causing severe damage to homes and businesses. Authorities say Klix took deposits to repair screened enclosures but never performed the work, leaving his victims out thousands of dollars. In 2006, Klix pleaded guilty to unlicensed contracting. He was placed on probation and ordered to pay restitution to his victims. He failed to do so and vanished in January of 2007, the sheriff’s office said.
Klix also had warrants out of St. Lucie County and faces extradition back to the Treasure Coast to face charges.
