A West Palm Beach man is accused of beating and stabbing his niece’s boyfriend with a butcher knife to stop her from leaving with him, according to police.

Eugene Sanders, 35, was arrested Wednesday for aggravated battery. He approached his niece’s 21-year-old boyfriend with a concealed butcher knife in front of their home in West Palm Beach, according to police.

The niece was inside packing a bag and shouted at her boyfriend to get into his car and drive away. Sanders attempted to punch the boyfriend once, but missed. The 21-year-old then punched back twice in self-defense, he told police. Sanders then stabbed the victim in the right shoulder and cut him on the wrist with the butcher knife, according to the police report.

Sanders told police that he did not like the boyfriend because he was “abusive” to his niece in the past. He also told police that he didn’t stab the victim, but the victim ran into his knife.

Sanders remains in Palm Beach County Jail awaiting $10,000 bail.
