A 50-year-old Lantana man robbed a convenience store last week and bragged to a friend about the crime, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deon Hill’s boasting resulted in his arrest Friday after his friend turned him in to authorities.  He is accused of stealing more than $500 in cash Wednesday night from the Kwik Stop store at 1418 S. Dixie Highway in Lake Worth.

Hill was being held without bail Monday night at the Palm Beach County Jail.

According to sheriff’s investigators, in the hours after the robbery, Hill picked up a homeless man who had spent several days staying at his house.  Hill showed him the stolen cash and bragged that he was going to buy a large amount of crack cocaine, the sheriff’s office said.

The following day, the homeless man went to the convenience store and told a store employee he knew who was responsible for the robbery. While speaking to deputies about an unrelated incident later, the homeless man provided details about the robbery.

Sheriff’s investigators say that Hill entered the Kwik Stop shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday and selected several cans of beer from a cooler.   He dropped some of the cans, catching the store clerk’s attention. The clerk helped Hill, then returned to the cash register.

When Hill went to the register, he asked the clerk for cigarettes. As the  clerk reached for cigarettes, Hill pulled out a note demanding money and raised his shirt to show a semi-automatic handgun tucked in his pants, deputies said.

The clerk hesitated in fear, reportedly prompting Hill to pull out the gun and point it at the clerk. The clerk handed over $524 to Hill, who then fled on foot, the sheriff’s office said.
