A taste for steak, shrimp and lobster tails landed two men in jail in Thursday after they allegedly were caught shoplifting at a Jupiter Publix supermarket.

Town police say that Robert S. Eaves, 64, of Jupiter and Edgar A. Johnson, 62, of West Palm Beach, stole food items from the Publix at 5500 Military Trail, north of Donald Ross Road.  The men were seen concealing food in a reusable shopping bag before  leaving the store without paying, police said.

Eaves and Johnson allegedly took $372.47 worth of groceries. A store employee reported to police officers that the men got into a white Ford pickup and drove west on Donald Ross. An officer saw the truck heading toward southbound Interstate 95 and pulled the truck over.

Eaves and Johnson were removed from the vehicle. An officer found a green reusable shopping bag and a large soft cooler, both containing items from Publix, according to an arrest report. Eaves and Johnson denied stealing the items, but they could not produce a receipt, police said.

According to an arrest report, Eaves asked an officer what he and Johnson would be charged with. When the officer said the charge was felony retail theft, Eaves replied by stating that the items came from two different Publix stores, in the process admitting to the crime, police said. He reportedly believed that the delay in the separate thefts would only be a misdemeanor.
