A Delray Beach baker is facing a criminal charge after he was allegedly caught stealing baking products from his employer.
Gaston Jean, the head baker of Old School Bakery company in Delray Beach, was arrested Tuesday morning on a charge of grand theft. He was released on his own recognizance later in the day.
According to Delray police, Jean, 49, stole more than $2,600 worth of bakery items, including several bags of sesame seed and high gluten flour, and boxes of instant yeast. Jean had been the company’s head baker for 15 years.
The initial thefts reportedly began in early April and continued through the first week of May. Surveillance video showed Jean loading the bakery items into his van. On Monday night, the bakery owner called police and reported that he was watching live surveillance footage of Jean stealing items.
Jean was taken into custody without incident. An arrest report does not indicate whether Jean gave a statement.
