Two teens in Martin County were arrested Thursday after allegedly making separate written threats at their respective schools.

A 14-year-old boy was arrested in connection with a written threat that was found Wednesday at Martin County High School. He was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after confessing to school resource officers, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office said.

On Thursday evening, deputies also arrested a 14-year-old girl who allegedly left a similar threat on a desk at Hidden Oaks Middle School. Investigators believe the second threat was a copycat situation, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Christine Weiss said.

“The message here is it not a joke to do something like that,” she said.

The initial written note indicated that a ‘187’ – the California penal code for murder – was going to happen at the high school Thursday.  Sheriff’s deputies and school resource officers determined that neither threat was credible.

Deputies did not release the name of either teen Thursday night.

Both face a felony charge of conveyance of a written threat. The boy was processed at the juvenile detention center and released to the custody his family. The girl was being processed Thursday night and was expected to be turned over to her family later.
