An injured bobcat is being cared for in a rehabilitation facility in Okeechobee after it was found Wednesday by authorities in Martin County.

A Martin County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Officer found a young female bobcat Wednesday morning near a residential area in Palm City. The bobcat is estimated to be about 4 months old. Someone may have dumped the animal after holding it in captivity, the sheriff’s office said Thursday.

Workers at the rehabilitation facility told sheriff’s officials the animal was undernourished, may suffer from blindness and may also be suffering from a head injury.  A veterinarian was working Thursday to determine the extent of the bobcat’s injuries and its chances for survival.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating circumstances surrounding the animal since it was found near a residential area.

Anyone with information is asked to sheriff’s agricultural detectives at 772-220-7000
