A Port St. Lucie  man described by police as a serial car burglar was arrested  Friday.

William Edward Harmon Jr., 29, is suspected of at least seven  burglaries in recent weeks, according to a joint statement released  by the Port St. Lucie Department and the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.

Port St. Lucie officers charged him with two counts of burglary to a conveyance. Detectives are trying to determine whether Harmon is connected to eight other car burglaries, Chief John Bolduc said. Sheriff’s investigators believe he may have been involved in five other recent car burglaries, Sheriff Ken Mascara said.

Harmon was taken into custody after Port St. Lucie officers responded  to a reported smash-and-grab car burglary. The burglary occurred at about 11:30 a.m. at Planet Fitness in the Darwin Square on Southwest Port St. Lucie Boulevard, police said.  Officers reportedly spotted Harmon’s black and grey Lexus traveling north on Northwest St. Lucie West Boulevard. They followed the Lexus to the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant, then made contact with Harmon. During the stop, officers allegedly found a driver’s license and purse belonging to the victim of the Planet Fitness burglary.

According to investigators, police officers and sheriff’s deputies have responded to at least 15 calls for car burglaries since Dec. 27. The suspect reportedly smashed car windows and took purses, backpacks, identification, jewelry and other items of value.
