NORTH PALM BEACH – A 30-year-old woman started a fire in her mother’s home last week while trying to hide a hot crack pipe in a bathroom linen closet, village police said.
Police say Juliana Broverio hid the pipe Thursday as her mother and two children were returning to their home, east of Anchorage Park. North Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens firefighters put out the fire in a guest bathroom before it could spread to the rest of the residence, according to probable-cause affidavit made public Monday.
The fire was deemed suspicious and investigators found a makeshift crack pipe on the floor of the bathroom, the affidavit said. Broverio denied any involvement in the fire, but she allegedly later admitted to smoking the crack pipe in the bathroom.
She told deputies she heard the garage door open and quickly hid the hot pipe under a towel in the closet, the affidavit said. Broverio’s mother said she had been home for about 20 minutes and was making a sandwich when she smelled smoke.
Broverio was arrested Friday on charges of first-degree arson, possession of drug paraphernalia and child neglect. She remained in custody at the Palm Beach County Jail late Monday in lieu of $16,000 bail.
